Impact crush the Union
The Montreal Impact continued their inconsistent season on Saturday with a 4-0 hammering of the Philadelphia Union at Saputo Stadium.
Lassi Lappalainen and Orji Okwonkwo each scored twice for the hosts who snapped a four-game skid in the process.
The Impact had stumbled against Atlanta United, Minnesota United, Toronto FC and the Columbus Crew, but the arrival of Lappalainen, on loan from Bologna in Serie A, worked wonders as the Finnish international opened the scoring in the 4th minute.
Lappalainen was also on target to start the second half as the Impact capitalized on an immediate turnover and quickly counterattacked with the young Finn adding his second, and Montreal's third of the game, with an accurate shot into the far corner.
The victory moved the Impact to within a point of the New York Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference standings after the latter were upset, at home, 3-2 by the Columbus Crew.
It was only the second win on the road this season for the Crew who previously defeated the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro back in early March.
That was when the Revolution were starting the season badly. The arrival of Bruce Arena as their new manager has completely changed the complexion for New England who, like the Impact, were also scoring four goals on Saturday.
The Revolution rolled to a 4-1 triumph over Orlando City and maintained their seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
MLS shuts down the regular season for the next week with the MLS All-Stars taking on Atletico Madrid in Orlando on Wednesday.
Montreal are 40/1 to win the MLS Cup this season with Philadelphia 16/1 and LAFC 9/4.
LAFC's Carlos Vela is at 1/3 to be the MLS top goalscorer this season with Zlatan Ibrahimovic 6/1.
