Ilenikhena Eager to Make Super Eagles Debut Against Madagascar
George Ilenikhena says he is ready to seize his opportunity with the Super Eagles as he targets a first appearance for Nigeria in Friday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Madagascar, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
The 20-year-old Al-Ittihad forward received his maiden invitation to the senior national team after being named in Éric Chelle’s squad for the qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Speaking during a media parley in Uyo, Ilenikhena described his call-up as a major moment in his young career and said he was proud to be among a group of established Super Eagles players.
“It is an honour to be here. I am proud and happy to be part of this big national team, and for me, it’s a big deal,” he said.
The former youth international also praised the atmosphere within the squad, revealing that he quickly felt welcomed despite only arriving in camp on Tuesday.
“I am just 20 years old, and I am here with big and already accomplished players. “The team spirit is very good. I just arrived yesterday (Tuesday), and I can see that everyone is together like a big family, and that’s very good.”
Nigeria will open their AFCON qualifying campaign against Madagascar’s Barea at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday.
Ilenikhena is hoping Chelle will hand him his senior debut and insists he is prepared to make an impact whenever called upon.
“I am very excited. I will give my best, like always. I will give my best when the coach puts me on the pitch and help the team in the best way I can,” Ilenikhena added.
The young striker also expressed confidence in the team’s preparations as Nigeria prepare to begin their journey towards the 2027 continental tournament.
“We are ready and excited to play this first game, and we are preparing in the best way to win on Friday.”
