Sunshine Stars  yesterday insisted that their  banishment  to Ijebu Ode  would  not negatively affect them.

The League Management Company on Tuesday announced the  banishment of the struggling  Akure  team to the Otunba  Dipo Dina Stadium  in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State,  where they are to play their remaining Premier  League home matches behind closed doors.

Their  goalkeeper  David Ariyo  was handed a 12-match suspension by the LMC for  allegedly  assaulting  the assistant referee during  their  Week 23  match  against Plateau United at the Akure  Stadium on June 7. The LMC also fined Sunshine  N1m, out of which  the assistant  referee will get N250,000 as compensation.

However,   the Media Officer of the club  Chris Okunuwa told our correspondent that playing outside their base would motivate the team to perform better, adding that Ijebu Ode is not a strange land to the team.

He said, “We have accepted the decision of the LMC, but one thing is sure, we will not  be relegated, in spite of the banishment.

“We  will get out of the relegation zone, everyone in the team is very committed to the matter at this point and Ijebu Ode is not a strange land to us.

“We once played there and we performed better. That is what is going to happen now, we are going to have good outings there.”
