"?Hull City are set to make Abel Hernandez their highest earner at the club in a bid to ward off interest for his services in the January transfer window.

"?The Daily Mirror claims that the Humberside outfit are ready to hand the striker a bumper new deal that would see his weekly wage rise to £55,000-a-week, and the ongoing talks are said to continue when Hernandez returns from international duty later in the week.

Hernandez has two years remaining on his current deal with Hull, but the club have the option of extending his stay in England if they see fit to do so.

The 26-year-old was thought to be the subject of interest from a host of clubs across Europe throughout the summer, including Serie A sides Napoli and Fiorentina, as well as relegated Aston Villa and Premier League rivals West Bromwich Albion, with a fee of around £20m reported in some quarters for Hull to part with their star striker.

However, Hull were able to fend off interest in their leading attacker and are now desperate to tie the Uruguay international down to a better contract to retain his talents for the foreseeable future.

Hernandez was believed to have become unsettled at the KCOM stadium in the wake of former manager Steve Bruce's untimely departure from the club in the summer.

However, under interim manager Mike Phelan, Hull had begun the 2016/17 campaign in decent form and have racked up seven points from their opening seven matches back in the top flight, which is rumoured to have placated Hernandez somwehat.

Hernandez originally joined Hull from Italian side Palermo for £10m in the summer of 2014.

The forward scored four times in his maiden season as Hull suffered relegation from the Premier League but, thanks to Hernandez plundering 20 goals in 39 league appearances last term, the club made an immediate return to the top tier of English football.

Hernandez has scored once in seven appearances so far this term - his sole strike coming the 2-0 away victory over Swansea City in the second round of fixtures.
