Imo state torchbearers, Heartland Queens will on Thursday, May 09, 2024 confront the Bayelsa state opposite and non-league side, Golden Sun Sports Club for a prime place in the round of 16 of the oldest and most glamorous Cup competition in the land, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The round of 32 President Federation Cup will hold at the Mainbowl of Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta state. The Cup clash will be the first time ever competitive and non-competitive game between the Owerri mainstreams and the grassroots side from Yenagoa, Bayelsa state.

Unlike the Owerri landladies who are bringing experiences to the centre as perennial Cup holders of her state, Golden Sun are runners-up to Bayelsa Queens and two timers at the centre. Golden Sun, however, are the current champions of Bayelsa Governor's Cup Football Tournament, tagged, 'Prosperity Cup'.

The Owerri side had her best record in the Cup competition in 2022 where they were rudely beaten in the quarterfinals by the reigning Nigerian league champions, Delta Queens, while it was the turn of the NWFL Championship side, Lakeside Queens to stop the Owerri mainstreams' title dreams in the round of 16 in the 2023 edition of the yearly football showpiece.

Suffices it to mention that prior to being thrown out of the Cup competition in 2023 the Owerri side made a very light work of the Watersmeet side, Confluence Queens in the round of 32. The alarm bell of that bitter pills is surely going to reverberate in the ears of the Owerri side when they step out to confront the rookies from Bayelsa state on Thursday in Asaba.

Heartland Queens are already tipped by the bookmakers to progress to the round of 16 at the expense of Golden Sun where they will have the rare chance to battle Premiership giants, FC Robo Queens.

Worth of note is the fact that Heartland Queens will be among the best six teams in the land that will vie for the league crown at the NWFL Premiership Super Six and a golden opportunity to earn the enviable ticket to represent the country at the CAF Women's Champions League.

Federation Cup is noted as competition with full of surprises where rookies shoot down heavyweights with relish. Golden Sun come into the fray with rich pedigree as vice champions of Bayelsa FA Cup and Heartland Queens who have been previously beaten by little known side, Lakeside Queens can only treat the emergent 'banana peels' with levity at their own perils.

The Owerri side come to the party with an intimidating profile and they must push hardest the bitter pills down the opposite throats in a seamless fashion at least to prove to the naysayers that their first time ever Super Six qualification was not a fluke but well deserved.

And what will be more deserving and befitting gifts to the newly appointed Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha and the ever supportive and sports loving governor, Dist. Sen. Hope Uzodinma and the entire Imolites than a resounding victory and ticket to the round of 16.
