Hansi Flick hints at Barcelona defensive concerns despite Valencia rout

Barcelona continued their perfect start to the La Liga season with a 5-0 victory over Valencia, but head coach Hansi Flick appeared to let slip that he is not completely satisfied with the team’s defensive strength.

However, it was Flick’s comments about the strengths of his team at the post-match news conference that attracted attention. While discussing Barcelona’s qualities, the German manager misspoke in a way that suggested he remains less impressed by the side’s defending than by other aspects of their play.

Flick’s apparent slip came after a result that highlighted Barcelona’s attacking efficiency. They scored five times against Valencia, adding to an impressive early-season goalscoring record after four rounds of La Liga.

Barcelona have now collected 12 points from a possible 12. They have scored 17 goals during that run and conceded only twice, leaving them with a strong statistical record at both ends of the pitch despite the concern implied by their manager’s wording.

The victory over Valencia was settled by goals from five different players, with Yamal the only player to score more than once. His double helped Barcelona build a commanding advantage, while Lopez, Raphinha and Pedri completed the rout.

For Flick, the result underlined the attacking options available to Barcelona, but his remarks provided a reminder that defensive performances remain an area of focus. The side has allowed just two goals so far, although the coach’s comments indicated that he does not regard that part of the team as equally convincing.
