Guler stakes his claim as Diomande struggles on first Real Madrid start

Yan Diomande’s first start for Real Madrid ended with Arda Guler strengthening his claim to a regular place in the team, as the Ivorian failed to make a decisive impact in the 4-1 win over Rayo Vallecano.

Signed from Leipzig for 140 million euros, Diomande had been used sparingly before finally being named in Jose Mourinho’s starting XI. However, deployed on the right wing rather than on the left, where he is more accustomed to playing, the 21-year-old struggled to influence the contest.

Diomande was not disastrous, but his performance followed the pattern of his recent appearances. He produced one promising burst of acceleration, beat two opponents before cutting inside and shooting well over the crossbar, and contributed some defensive work. Those moments, though, were not enough to challenge the existing hierarchy or justify the expectations attached to his transfer fee.

Marca awarded him 5/10, the lowest mark given to any Real Madrid starter. The newspaper’s assessment was blunt:

“More is expected from the most expensive player in the history of Real Madrid than two good bursts down his flank.”

AS, meanwhile, described a degree of timidity in Diomande’s performance.

The situation became more difficult for the Ivorian after he was substituted in the 71st minute. Guler immediately added energy and purpose to Real Madrid’s attacking play, with his vision, willingness to take the initiative and quality on his left foot clearly affecting the game.

The Turkey international also provided an assist, reinforcing the impression that he currently holds a significant advantage over Diomande in the competition for a starting place.

Speaking on Cadena SER, Antonio Romero summed up the current picture by saying: “The starter today is Guler.”

The contrast between the two young players was stark. Diomande appeared hesitant and at times constrained by his role, while Guler played with greater freedom and personality after coming on.

Diomande’s ability is not in question. His season at Leipzig, rapid development and potential persuaded Real Madrid to make a major investment. But moving within a matter of months from emerging talent to the most expensive signing in the club’s history represents a considerable change in expectations.

At Real Madrid, he must now deal with the pressure of that fee, competition for places and a position that does not yet appear entirely natural to him.

The Santiago Bernabeu crowd remained patient and applauded Diomande when he left the pitch. However, his first start did little to bring him closer to a permanent place in the team. Instead, it showed why Guler is currently ahead of him.
