Granit Xhaka faces Swiss police inquiry over vaccination records

Sunderland midfielder and Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka is the subject of an investigation into allegations that he obtained fraudulent Covid-19 vaccination certificates, police in Lucerne have said.

Swiss media, including Blick, reports that Xhaka may have received the certificates from his doctor without being vaccinated. The doctor is also being investigated on suspicion of issuing fake documents.

Xhaka’s representative, Andreas Bantel, said the footballer would not comment publicly on the matter at this stage.

However, Bantel added that Xhaka was “fully and unconditionally prepared to co-operate with the authorities”.

Xhaka, who now plays for English club Sunderland, had Covid-19 in 2021 and again at the beginning of 2022.
