Golden Eaglets held by Derby Academy in entertaining Abuja draw
The Golden Eaglets were held to a 1-1 draw by Derby Academy in an entertaining friendly at the Sunrise Football Pitch in Abuja on Friday.
Derby Academy, playing on their home ground, made the stronger start and controlled the tempo as they looked for an early breakthrough. Nigeria were forced to defend for long periods, but the Golden Eaglets’ backline stood firm and prevented the hosts from turning their pressure into a goal.
The five-time world champions gradually grew into the contest and began to take control in midfield. Their fluid passing and rapid movement from midfield into attack unsettled Derby Academy, although neither side was able to make the decisive breakthrough before the interval.
The match remained open after the restart, with both teams committing players forward and creating an end-to-end contest. Derby Academy eventually broke the deadlock on the hour mark after one of their attackers was brought down inside the penalty area.
The referee awarded a penalty, which was converted calmly to put the home side in front.
The goal prompted an immediate response from the Golden Eaglets, who increased the pressure on the Derby Academy defence in search of an equaliser. Their persistence was rewarded seven minutes later when they levelled the score.
With the game back on terms, both teams continued to push for a winner. However, neither side could find the final goal and the friendly ended 1-1 after an open and competitive encounter.
The fixture formed part of Nigeria’s preparations for the WAFU B U17 Championship, which begins in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on Saturday, 10th October.
Nigeria will compete in Group B alongside Cote d’Ivoire and Niger Republic. The Golden Eaglets are scheduled to play their opening match of the tournament on 14th October.
