Legendary Nigeria International, Segun Odegbami has disclosed his happiness for Victor Osimhen who broke his long-held goal scoring record after the match against Rwanda on Friday, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The 2023 African footballer of the year scored twice in the first half to give Nigeria a 0-2 win in Kigali in the World Cup Qualifiers and take his goal record for Nigeria, two better than than Odegbami's 23.

The Galatasaray goal poacher had equalled his Odegbami's goal record in November when he scored in the 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in a 2025 AFCON qualifying game in Abidjan, heading home in the 81st minute for his 23rd goal in 38 appearances.

Odegbami who held the second highest goal scorer spot for 44 years behind Rashidi Yekini stated wished the Super Eagles talisman good luck.

"Osimhen has finally overtaken me and I think that is good because the record has been hanging on for a very long time. I am very happy for him and I want to say good luck to him,” Odegbami told PUNCH Sports Extra.

“He is still young and he has a long way to go.”

Odegbami also gave his take on the 0-2 win by Super Eagles regarding it as the most convincing win in 10 years.

“I am really impressed with the Eagles performance in Kigali and that is their most convincing win in 10 years,” he added.

Osimhen needs to score twelve more goals to equal the top goal scorer record held by late Rashidi Yekini.
