Ghana midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah to pick Champions League medal tonight if Juventus defeat Barcelona
Kwadwo Asamoah is most certain to receive a UEFA Champions League medal tonight if Italian club Juventus defeat Barcelona in the final even though he has not played many matches in the competition this season.
There are huge doubts whether the Ghana midfielder will be given a medal as he has not played many matches in their march to the final of Europe's flagship club competition.
Asamoah was a key player for the Italian champions before he suffered a knee injury that kept him out of action for six months as he returned to action just last month.
The injury led to his exclusion from Juventus' Champions League squad at the knock-out stages of the competition which has sparked fears that he won't be given a medal if they win tonight.
However, a regulation in UEFA's books has revealed that the Ghanaian's fate is down to the decision of the club who will be given forty medal to share among the squad.
The UEFA Champions League Article 5.04, says: 'Forty gold medals are presented to the winning club, and forty silver medals to the runner-up. Additional medals may not be produced.'
According the official UEFA handbook, UEFA offers 40 Gold Medals to the winners of the Champions League and Europa League, and 30 Silver Medals to the Runners-Up in both competitions specifying that no additional medals are permitted.
From that point onward, it is the club's choice (Essentially meaning its the manager's choice) to award the medal to any player he/she feels may deserve so.
There is certainly no language barring a player who hasn't played sufficient games or was cup-tied from receiving a medal.
So with Juventus using just 24 players including Asamoah in their march to the final, the Ghanaian is likely to be given a medal by his club as he is deemed to have contributed to the success.
Asamoah was not part of the squad that travelled to Berlin for the match but he will be at the stadium to watch the match and will be called on the stage to receive his medal if they win the match.
