Gerrard calls for ruthless Rangers
Steven Gerrard says he was expecting to rack up a few more goals in Rangers' 2-0 win over Progres Niederkorn in the Europa League on Thursday.
The Gers have been handed the chance to extract a measure of revenge on the part-timers from Luxembourg, who inflicted one of the worst defeats in the club's history when knocking them out of Europe two years ago.
A few of the players who were in the team that lost to Progres still remain at Ibrox and Gerrard had been hoping to see the Scottish giants heal any remaining wounds with a big win on home soil in the first leg of the qualifying tie.
Joe Aribo and Sheyi Ojo did manage to find the back of the net for the Light Blues but they also missed several other chances to put the tie to bed ahead of the return leg, including James Tavernier failing to convert a penalty kick.
Gerrard felt his team did not make their superiority count enough and wants to see Rangers take their chances in future matches.
He said: "The game plan tonight was to try and kill the tie as early as we can. I believe we've created more than enough chances to do that.
"In big moments in the game we haven't been clinical enough.
"Obviously the penalty springs to mind and we probably had six or seven decent chances on top of that to score more goals.
"I think you can see a gulf in both teams tonight so they need to do something drastically different from their game plan tonight.
"I predict there will be openings for us to go and create more chances. But we do need to be more clinical in front of goal and try kill this tie as early as we can."
Following next week's second leg against Progres, Rangers begin their domestic campaign on 4th August when they face Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.
Killie are 10/3 for the win with the Gers 8/11 and the draw 3/1.
Rangers are 2/1 to win the Scottish Premiership this season.
