Gerard Martin praises Joan Garcia’s immediate impact at Barcelona
Gerard Martin says Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia has already made such a strong impression that team-mates sometimes feel he is “right behind us”, after the 25-year-old started all four of the club’s La Liga matches this season.
Garcia has conceded only two goals since the campaign began and has kept three clean sheets. His record has helped Barcelona make a perfect start to the Spanish league season, with the Catalan side taking 12 points from their opening four games.
Martin, a Barcelona defender, spoke positively about the goalkeeper’s influence as the club moved to the top of the table. Referring to Garcia’s presence behind the defence, Martin said: “Sometimes it feels as if Joan Garcia is standing right behind us.”
The comment underlines the confidence Barcelona’s players have placed in their new goalkeeper during the opening stages of the season. Garcia has been selected in each of the club’s four league matches and has quickly become a consistent figure in goal.
Barcelona’s defensive record has been one of the defining features of their start. They have allowed two goals across the first four rounds, while Garcia has recorded three matches without conceding. The goalkeeper has therefore been beaten only twice in the competition so far.
After four rounds, Barcelona sit first in the standings on 12 points. That total represents the maximum available from their opening fixtures and leaves the club at the summit ahead of the next round of matches.
The next challenge for Barcelona will come away from home against Levante. Garcia will be aiming to continue his run of appearances and maintain the form that has seen him keep three clean sheets in his first four league outings of the new season.
For Martin and the rest of the Barcelona defence, Garcia’s performances have provided an important presence behind them. His involvement in every match, combined with the small number of goals conceded, has been central to the side’s early defensive record.
The 25-year-old has made an immediate contribution to Barcelona’s unbeaten start in terms of points gained. With the club leading the table after four games and preparing for an away fixture against Levante, attention will now turn to whether Garcia can preserve the same level of consistency in the next match.
Martin’s assessment offers an indication of how the goalkeeper is viewed by those playing in front of him. Rather than being a distant figure behind the defensive line, Garcia has been described as close enough to feel “right behind us” a phrase that reflects his perceived presence within the team.
Barcelona’s first four league matches have produced two goals conceded, three clean sheets and 12 points. Garcia has featured in all of them, giving the club a settled option in goal as they continue their campaign at the top of the Spanish championship.
