GATTUSO: "A POINT GAINED"
Gennaro Gattuso said he was ultimately happy to leave Bologna with a point given the way the second half unfolded at the Stadio Dall'Ara. Kostas Manolas headed the Azzurri in front early on but they looked a different side after the interval as the hosts grew into the game and finished stronger.
“I think a point is a good result at the end of the day because we came under the cosh and Bologna were better than us,” the boss admitted following Wednesday's 1-1 draw. "In the second half I saw the same flaws we had four or five months ago. We weren't able to maintain the same tempo and play the same football we played in the first half. We definitely looked below the level we've been playing at in our last few outings. I must give credit where it's due to Bologna. They play with the same character as their coach. We knew what they were about and we needed to play with intensity from start to finish. We eased up and came under lots of pressure".
"It's not about individuals – it's a team problem. We weren't consistent enough or good enough. We didn't get enough balls up to the forwards and we lost our shape in the second period. I want us to be fully focused at all times. I was happy with our first-half display – we played some good football at times. The problem was we didn't play with that mentality until the end so Bologna gained the upper hand and pushed us back. I don't care if we're playing Barcelona in three weeks' time. We have the league to think about now and we must give 100% in every match until the end.”
