Manchester United's caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has indicated that James Garner could play some part in Saturday's game against Southampton.

The 17-year-old came on as a substitute for Fred on Wednesday as United won 3-1 at Crystal Palace - Romelu Lukaku grabbing a brace for United before Ashley Young scored a late third.

Solskjaer said of Garner, who has captained England at youth level. "We've been waiting for that chance [to introduce him to the first team].

"Of course, now with Nemanja [Matic] and Ander [Herrera] injured, there will be more chances for Jimmy. We might even see him on Saturday against Southampton again.

"I believe he has got the chance to have a great future. Of course, he has to keep working. He knows we believe in him. We have great faith in him as the next Michael Carrick."

Meanwhile, Belgium international Lukaku is focused on helping United finish in the top four this season.

United are fifth in the Premier League table, a point behind Arsenal in fourth and two ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea.

Lukaku said: "I'm excited for the next couple of weeks because, with the players we have, we're going to get results and, when the injured players come back, hopefully they can give us the push that we need to finish as high as possible in the league."

The 25-year-old's brace against the Eagles means he has scored 10 Premier League goals this season and now has 111 to his name in his career.

He added: "It doesn't matter if I play left, right or up front, I always try and do my best for the team. As long as the team win and I can contribute to the win, I am happy."

United, 11/10 to finish in the top four this season, can be backed at 9/20 to beat Southampton at Old Trafford on Saturday. Lukaku is 9/2 to be the first goalscorer in the match.
