Freiburg go top after thrashing Borussia Monchengladbach 5-0
Freiburg moved to the top of the Bundesliga with a 5-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach in the third round of the German championship.
The hosts established control in the first half and went into the interval two goals ahead. Christian Gunter’s corner caused confusion in the Borussia defence, allowing Engelhardt to score after the goalkeeper came off his line and failed to deal with the delivery.
Freiburg doubled their advantage when Matanovic met the ball first time from the edge of the penalty area. His shot struck the post before finding the net.
Borussia Monchengladbach struggled to respond after the break, and their task became even harder when Kleindienst was sent off early in the second half.
Freiburg took full advantage of their numerical superiority. Matanovic scored his second goal of the match from close range in the 77th minute, before Engelhardt also completed a double with a precise finish from the edge of the penalty area.
There was still time for Freiburg to add a fifth. In the 86th minute, Eggestein reacted quickest to a rebound and finished from close range.
The result leaves Freiburg with the maximum nine points from their opening three matches and top of the Bundesliga in the online table.
Borussia Monchengladbach are at the bottom, with the club yet to collect a point.
