Former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international striker Roy O'Donovan has joined Robbie Fowler's Brisbane Roar on a two-year deal.

Roar are O'Donovan's third A-League club, having been successful with both Central Coast and Newcastle Jets. He netted 19 goals in 45 games for the Mariners and scored 20 time in the last two seasons with the Jets.

O'Donovan is the first player signed by Fowler since he took charge of the Roar.

The former Liverpool and England striker, who has presided over a clear-out at the club with 14 players leaving, said: "I'm very happy that we have secured Roy for the next two seasons. Getting a quality striker with a proven track record in the A-League was a key position for us to fill.

"I was impressed with what I've seen of Roy so far and genuinely feel that there is plenty more to come from him and look forward to his contribution as a goal scorer and an experienced member of the squad."

O'Donovan scored nine goals in 17 league games for Newcastle in 2017/18, helping them reach the Grand Final where they lost to Melbourne Victory.

The 33-year-old former Sunderland player said the chance to work with Fowler was a big factor in his decision to join, after he rejected the offer of a new deal at the Jets.

"Brisbane is a big A-League club and I'm looking forward to challenging the top teams next season and help to bring back the success that Brisbane have had in the past," he said.

O'Donovan will link up with his new team-mates when Brisbane's pre-season training officially gets underway next week.

Brisbane Roar are 16/1 to win the A-League Grand Final. Meanwhile, O'Donovan's former club Sunderland are 4/1 to win the League One title in England.
