Flick hints at second-half Barcelona bow for Gabriel Jesus

Gabriel Jesus could make his Barcelona debut against Valencia on Sunday after manager Hansi Flick confirmed the former Arsenal forward is among the options to feature after half-time.

Jesus completed a €10m move from Arsenal on transfer deadline day, ending a four-season spell in north London. The Brazil international’s opportunities at Arsenal had been limited by the presence of Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres, as well as a series of injury problems.

Barcelona have moved for Jesus following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. The current LaLiga champions are now preparing to take him to Estadio Mestalla for their meeting with Valencia, although Flick says the 27-year-old is not yet fully match-ready.

"He's certainly not at 100% just yet, but he can already play a few minutes. He has a chance to play in the second half.

"I've really liked how he's arrived and what I've seen so far. All of which has been done without being at 100%, but he's ready to play. He's one of the options for tomorrow in the second half, depending on how the game goes."

Flick’s comments leave open the possibility of Jesus being introduced during the second half rather than starting the match. His involvement will depend on how the game develops and on the player’s fitness after his recent transfer.

The forward arrives at Barcelona after four seasons with Arsenal, where he found his route into the first team increasingly restricted. Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres were ahead of him in the competition for opportunities, while injury issues also disrupted his progress.

Barcelona’s decision to sign Jesus followed the departures of Lewandowski and Torres, creating a need for attacking options within the squad. The club have therefore given him the chance to restart his career in LaLiga, despite Flick’s admission that he has not yet reached full fitness.

For now, the manager’s plan is cautious. Jesus has trained and made a positive impression since arriving, according to Flick, but his first appearance for Barcelona is likely to be limited to a few minutes if he is selected.

The transfer brings an end to Jesus’ time at the Emirates Stadium and begins a new chapter with the reigning LaLiga champions. Whether that chapter starts at Valencia will be decided by Flick’s assessment of the match and the player’s condition.
