Flamingos Begin WAFU B U-17 Campaign Against Ghana
Nigeria’s Flamingos will launch their 2026 WAFU B U-17 Girls Championship campaign against familiar rivals Ghana as they begin their push for regional success and qualification for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
The Group B encounter is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, at the CKB Stadium in Côte d’Ivoire, with Nigeria facing a difficult opening test against one of the region’s strongest youth sides.
The Flamingos have been placed in Group B alongside Ghana, Togo and Niger Republic, setting up a competitive battle for the two-time FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup bronze medallists.
The meeting with Ghana is expected to provide an immediate assessment of Nigeria’s preparations, given the long-standing rivalry between both countries at various youth levels.
After Wednesday’s opening fixture, the Flamingos will take on Togo before concluding their group-stage campaign against Niger Republic.
A positive result against Ghana would put Nigeria in a strong position to progress from the group, with every point likely to prove valuable in the race for the knockout stages.
The competition is also important beyond the pursuit of the WAFU B title, as the tournament serves as the regional qualification route for the 2027 U-17 Girls Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria will therefore have two major objectives in Côte d’Ivoire, winning the regional championship and securing a place at the continental tournament.
Côte d’Ivoire will host this year’s WAFU B U-17 Girls Championship, with the competition set to run from September 15 to 28.
The Flamingos are expected to travel to Côte d’Ivoire this weekend as preparations reach their final stage ahead of the opening clash with Ghana.
Nigeria will be hoping to start strongly and build the momentum required to negotiate a demanding group and keep its continental qualification ambitions on track.
