Fireworks in Portland
Three players were sent off in Portland on Saturday evening as the Timbers defeated the visiting LA Galaxy 4-0 at Providence Park.
The Galaxy's Efrain Alvarez was dismissed in the 84th minute and Diego Polenta and Dairon Asprilla followed after the final whistle.
Cristhian Paredes scored twice for the hosts and Diego Valeri and Jeremy Ebobisse were also on target as the Timbers moved into the playoff places in the Western Conference.
Portland spent their first 12 games of the season on the road due to stadium improvements being made on Providence Park.
That put the Timbers at a disadvantage in the standings, but also set up a scenario where they will play at home the majority of their games the rest of the campaign.
Having stayed in touch overall while playing all their games on the road, Portland is now reaping the reward. Although to be fair the size of the victory over the Galaxy was something of a surprise.
The Timbers are now up to seventh in the Western Conference standings, even on points, but ahead of Real Salt Lake on goal difference.
Meanwhile LA's loss in Portland allowed the Seattle Sounders to move back into second place in the Western Conference following their 1-0 triumph over the Dynamo in Houston.
Jordan Morris took advantage of sloppy defending on the part of the Dynamo to stab the ball home in the 59th minute at the BBVA Compass Stadium.
Seattle now leads the Galaxy and the San Jose Earthquakes by a single point in the standings. San Jose sent the Colorado Rapids back to the foot of the table with a 3-1 win.
The Timbers are 16/1 to win the MLS Cup this season with LA Galaxy 12/1 and LAFC 9/4.
LAFC's Carlos Vela is at 1/3 to be the MLS top goalscorer with Zlatan Ibrahimovic 6/1.
