Ex-Ghana captain Stephen Appiah haunted by 2010 FIFA World Cup semi-final miss
Retired Ex-Ghana captain Stephen Appiah says he is yet to come to terms with the missed opportunity to reach the semi-final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The former Fenerbahce star came of the bench to play a cameo in the quarter-final defeat to Uruguay.
Ghana had a last minute penalty in extra-time after Luis Suarez deliberately caught Dominic Adiyiah’s goal bound header on the line.
But Asamoah Gyan smashed it against the crossbar which could have sealed a historic qualification into the last four.
Hearts were broken and the Black Stars got kicked out via penalty shootouts.
“My tenure we achieved the single most important dream of qualifying Ghana to the World Cup in Germany 2006, we also shattered many Ghanaian hopes of reaching the semi-final, the first by an African country in our second attempt at the World Cup in South Africa 2010,” Appiah said in a statement.
“Africa was down. Ghana was down. And we the players were down too. I remember that episode with a great deal of pain but for a game that holds no certainty one can only grieve in silence and move on.”
