Enyimba’s Kanu urges supporters to stay behind team after winless start

Enyimba chairman Kanu Nwankwo has called on the club’s supporters to remain patient and continue backing the team after a difficult opening to the new season.

The People’s Elephant suffered a 1-0 defeat by newcomers Inter Lagos at Enyimba International Stadium in Aba on Sunday, leaving the nine-time champions with three defeats from three league matches.

The result leaves Emmanuel Deutsch’s side at the bottom of the table, less than a year after they secured their top-flight status on the final day of last season.

Enyimba now have an immediate opportunity to change their fortunes when they host Sporting Lagos on Wednesday.

Kanu calls for unity

Kanu acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the team’s start but said the club was determined to recover, while thanking supporters for attending the defeat by Inter Lagos despite the rain.

“The times have not been the most favourable. We understand the weight of the disappointing losses, and we are determined to make things right,” Kanu said in a statement posted on the club’s official X account.

“In the rain, you came out to support us against Inter Lagos. Though the result did not go our way, you supported us until the final minute, and we cannot take your support for granted.

“We implore you to stand with us as we wriggle our way out of this labyrinth.”

Wednesday’s home meeting with Sporting Lagos will be Enyimba’s next chance to claim their first victory of the campaign.

“Next for us is the home game against Sporting Lagos on Wednesday as we seek our first win of the season. A win can be a propeller,” Kanu added.

The chairman also appealed to supporters to help create the atmosphere needed for the team to begin its recovery.

“We are used to victories, and we are proud of that culture. Come cheer us to victory as we kick off a resurgence. We will get it right.”
