Gareth Southgate's England squad selection raised a number of eyebrows on Sunday evening with some of his choices, but the inclusion of one particular midfielder incurred the wrath of some England supporters.

After missing the cut in Southgate's first squad pick, Arsenal loanee Jack Wilshere seemingly did enough for Bournemouth in the past month to put himself into contention for a place against Scotland and Spain.

But some England fans have not been convinced by the 24-year-old's return to fitness and form and have criticised England's interim manager on social media for picking the midfielder.

Many supporters argued that the talented midfielder needed to prove his full fitness for a longer period, after only just recently lasting a full ninety-minute match for the first time since 2014.

No doubting Jack Wilshere's 'class' but he needs to play 6 months injury-free not 3 games to be selected for England

@FreakyParratt Southgate another FA Puppet, what more do expect, form does not come into it, just players postcodes

@SkyFootball @England Dear FA Southgate doesn't deserve the job

@SkyFootball @England I honestly think Southgate is scared of these boys that he can't leave them out, there are better players out there

But Southgate believes Wilshere has proved his fitness and insisted that his 'class' is important for the national side.

"Jack is a player who we feel has a lot of class, it's good for him to get some 90 minutes under his belt again and we felt the time was right to put him back in," the former Middlesbrough boss said.

"It's been important for him to get some regular football. We know the quality that he possesses and it's good for him to feel the faith that we have in him."?
