Earthquakes host the Crew
The San Jose Earthquakes could find themselves in second place in the Western Conference at the end of the day on Saturday, should they get the better of the Columbus Crew.
With the LA Galaxy facing a tough ask in their visit to face the defending MLS Cup champion Atlanta United, and the Seattle Sounders not playing Sporting Kansas City until Sunday, the Earthquakes could jump from fourth in the standings.
With three consecutive road games to follow, against the Colorado Rapids, Sporting Kansas City and LAFC, San Jose also knows that it would be useful to put points in the bank as they battle to claim one of the seven play-off places in the Conference.
The Earthquakes enter the contest with a four-game winning streak, having defeated Real Salt Lake, the Los Angeles Galaxy, the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Rapids, while also scoring three goals in each of their last four wins.
It's been a positive turnaround for a San Jose side that finished dead last in the Western Conference last season with only 21 points from their 34 matches.
Meanwhile, the Crew languishes in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, only above the Chicago Fire and the expansion FC Cincinnati in the standings.
Columbus has won their last two games, stunning both the New York Red Bulls and the Montreal Impact, both potential post-season sides in the Eastern Conference, and so San Jose will have been forewarned that this may not be the easy game that the relative table positions imply.
