Dermane punishes Burundi error as Togo lead at the break

Togo lead Burundi 1-0 at half-time in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match after Karim Dermane capitalised on a defensive mistake.

The Eperviers controlled the opening stages and took the lead shortly after the 15-minute mark. When the Burundi defence failed to clear the ball, Dermane reacted first and struck a powerful shot beyond goalkeeper Jonathan Nahimana.

Burundi gradually grew into the game and began to create problems for the Togo defence. Jean Claude Girumugisha was particularly effective on the left side of the Burundi attack, making several dangerous runs, but he was unable to turn his opportunities into a goal.

Togo had a chance to extend their advantage before the interval. Arnaud Komlanvi, who had been a lively presence in attack, saw his effort blocked by Nahimana.

The teams went into the dressing rooms with Togo holding a 1-0 lead. The Eperviers will now look to add a second goal in the second half and give themselves greater security against a Burundi side that finished the opening period with increased attacking intent.
