Denkey demands winning start as Togo begin CAN 2027 qualifying campaign

Kevin Denkey says he is certain Togo will reach the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, but insists their hopes depend on beating Burundi in their opening qualifying match.

The Eperviers have been completing their preparations at Stade de Kegue ahead of Friday’s home fixture, with the squad aware that victory would provide the ideal start to their campaign.

Speaking after training, Togo forward Denkey said the team understood the significance of the match and was determined to take control from the outset.

“I am certain that we are going to go to the Africa Cup of Nations now. It will also depend on this match against Burundi, which we are preparing for very well,” he said.

“It is a match we have to win and we know how important it is. We will do everything to win, and we will win this match here at home from the start.”

The striker also acknowledged the expectations surrounding the team as Togo prepare to begin their qualifying campaign in front of their home supporters.

He said the occasion could create additional pressure, particularly for players unfamiliar with the demands of playing in Togo, but described that pressure as a positive force.

“Playing here at home brings a lot of pressure for the new players who do not know what it is like. I think it is good pressure,” Denkey said.

“We know it is an important match and one that is really anticipated here in the country. So we are prepared and doing everything to be at 100%, or even 200%.”

Togo will face Burundi on Friday, 25 September 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 16:00 GMT at Stade de Kegue.
