Super Eagles and former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi is training with Swallows FC after a proposed move to Sekhukhune United fell through.

According to the iDiski Times of South Africa, Akpeyi first attracted the interest from Babina Noko during the off-season but his wage demands closed off the potential switch as they opted for Ivory Coast international Badra Ali Sangare.

In Edition 69 of the iDiski Times newspaper, Swallow's interest in the veteran stopper was reported but after being slapped with a transfer ban by FIFA – which Chairman David Mogashoa recently stated to SABC Sport would be sorted out – interest in his services cooled down.

His representatives confirmed to iDiski Times there was interest locally and abroad but they were weighing up options in what could be the final contract of his professional football career but this publication was informed they lowered the wage demands previously asked of from Sekhukhune.

While some interest was still there due to a poor start to the 2022/23 season for the club, having Zambia international Toaster Nsabata and 36-year-old Sangare in their ranks, they did not view interest in potential signing to challenge two foreign keepers for the number one spot as a feasible option.

Akpeyi, who also enjoyed a spell at Chippa United in the DStv Premiership was linked with a return to the Chilli Boys too, but it appears he’s now training with the Dube Birds as he looks to maintain his fitness.
