Corica signs Baumjohann
Sydney FC coach Steve Corica believes rivals Western Sydney's loss will be his gain, after signing Alexander Baumjohann from Wanderers.
The 32-year-old has joined on a two-year deal, becoming just the second player to move across the city to the Sky Blues.
Western Sydney released the German playmaker at the end of last season and he had been preparing to return to Europe before the defending champions approached him.
Last season was a big contrast in the fortunes of the two Sydney clubs, with Wanderers failing to make the Finals Series while Corica's team beat minor premiers Perth Glory in the Grand Final.
The Sky Blues coach feels that having signed Baumjohann after capturing Kosta Barbarouses from Melbourne Victory last month has boosted the team's title defence.
Baumjohan was let go by Wanderers despite being equal-fourth in chances created in the A-League last season - the three players ranked above him all played six or more games than he did.
"I'm sure after this season, they'll regret it," said Corica. "It's great, isn't it? The rivalries we already had with the Wanderers and Melbourne Victory, I think it's only going to be even bigger this year with the two signings we've made.
"As far as I'm concerned, Kosta and Alex are the best at what they do. We want to bring the best players into the club, best people as well; we believe we've done that."
Baumjohann, who has previously played for Bayern Munich and Schalke, said: "I think the style of football that Sydney played last season suits me perfectly. When you play alongside good players it makes you even better."
Sydney FC are set to unveil former Socceroo centre-back Ryan McGowan as another signing, but Corica is planning for life without Josh Brillante, who is officially a free agent after his contract expired.
Sydney FC are 4/1 to win the 2020 Grand Final.
