Swansea City chairman Trevor Birch is confident have got the right man for the job after they appointed Steve Cooper as their new head coach.

The 39-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the Swans, having made his name as boss of the England Under-17 side who won their age group World Cup two years ago.

He is highly regarded as one of the best young coaches in the country.

And Birch is delighted to have persuaded Cooper to try his hand at club management, with former Liverpool midfielder Mike Marsh named as assistant first-team coach.

Birch told the club's official website: "We are excited and delighted with the appointment.

"At the forefront of our thinking was the appointment of a head coach who was hungry, ambitious, had a clear track record of playing our style of football, plus a pedigree to work with and develop young, talented players.

"Steve matched all those requirements in abundance and his views, coaching ethos and presentation were extremely compelling.

"He is highly regarded as one of the best young coaches in the country and at some stage was always going to be given an opportunity by someone. I'm delighted we are that club."

The Swans finished in 10th place in the Championship last term, with Graham Potter departing the club after one season in charge to take over at Premier League Brighton & Hove Albion.

Swansea are priced at 10/1 to be promoted next season, while they can be backed at 33/1 to win the Championship title.
