Cook eyes Pilkington deal lift
Wigan boss Paul Cook is backing new signing Anthony Pilkington to be a "big asset for us" in the second half of the Championship season.
The 30-year-old former Republic of Ireland international winger has joined the struggling Latics on a free transfer from Premier League Cardiff City.
Pilkington has scored 23 goals in 111 appearances for the Bluebirds since joining from Norwich City, but has faied to feature under Neil Warnock in the top flight so far this season.
He won promotion with Cardiff City last season so he knows what it takes to do well at this level.

Therefore, he has dropped back to the Championship to pen an 18-month deal with a Wigan side which has not won in seven league games with their only victory in 12 coming against rivals Blackburn on 28th November.
It has left the side 20th in the Championship, just four points clear of the relegation places.
And Cook is looking for Pilkington to give his team a lift to pull away from the bottom three in the coming matches.
"Anthony has good experience in the Championship and Premier League, I am delighted to bring him to Wigan Athletic," he told the club website.
"He won promotion with Cardiff City last season so he knows what it takes to do well at this level and I am sure he will be a big asset to us for the rest of this campaign and beyond."
Pilkington could make his debut for Wigan, who are 9/1 to be relegated this season, against Aston Villa at the DW Stadium on Saturday.
Latics are 21/10 to win the game, while Villa are priced at 5/4 and the draw is 12/5.
