Como’s first-half masterclass leaves Lens facing UEFA Champions League fightback
RC Lens face a huge second-half challenge after Como produced a ruthless display to establish a 3-0 lead at half-time on matchday four of the UEFA Champions League.
The Italian side took control from the opening stages and struck after only seven minutes. Tasos Douvikas finished a move set up by M. Perrone to put Como ahead, leaving the home side stunned.
Lens briefly appeared to have a chance to respond when they appealed for a penalty in the 17th minute. However, after the involvement of VAR and the referee, the decision was that there was “no penalty” following an incident involving F. Thauvin.
Como continued to dictate the match as Lens struggled to contain their attacking pressure. The French club had 42% possession, compared with 58% for their visitors, and found themselves unable to disrupt the rhythm of the Italian team.
Douvikas added a second in the 32nd minute, completing his brace after being picked out by Alex Valle. His contribution then became even more influential moments later when he turned provider.
Nico Paz extended Como’s advantage in the 40th minute, converting after being set up by Douvikas. The forward had now scored twice and supplied an assist as Como took a commanding grip on the match before the interval.
With the score standing at 0-3 in the 41st minute, Lens were in danger of suffering a heavy home defeat. They will need a completely different and far more aggressive performance after the break if they are to overturn the deficit against a Como side that controlled the first half.
