City edge Wembley shootout
Manchester City have won the first silverware of the new season, beating Liverpool 5-4 on penalties to win the Community Shield at Wembley.
The teams were level at 1-1 at full-time and, with no extra-time, the match was decided in a penalty shootout, Claudio Bravo saving from Georginio Wijnaldum and Gabriel Jesus converting City's fifth to win the trophy.
Both managers selected strong teams a week ahead of the new Premier League season. Pep Guardiola gave a start to new signing Rodri with Angelino, the other newcomer on the bench. Leroy Sane was also in City's team despite reports linking him with Bayern Munich.
Jurgen Klopp meanwhile picked nine of his Champions League winning side to start at Wembley with Sadio Mane and Joel Matip the absentees.
Liverpool had a good chance to open the scoring, Roberto Firmino feeding Mohammed Salah and the Egyptian striker did well down the right side but the ball hit the outside the post.
They were made to pay a couple of minutes later when City went up the other end and scored with a well-worked free-kick, which was headed into the area by John Stones, flicked on by David Silva and Raheem Sterling was on hand to force the ball home from close range.
The Reds tried to respond and Firmino did well to take the ball down and turn impressively to get a shot in but it failed to trouble Bravo who was well behind the ball.
Sterling's goal was all that separated the sides after an entertaining opening 45 minutes but Liverpool had several chances to get back on level terms before equalising in the 77th minute, Matip, on as a substitute, getting the goal heading in after an excellent ball into the box from defensive partner Virgil van Dijk.
That ensured the match finished 1-1 but it was City who leave Wembley the happier, getting the 2019-20 season off to a winning start before the sides begin the new Premier League season next weekend.
Liverpool kick things off on Friday night with newly promoted Norwich the visitors to Anfield. Liverpool are 1/7 for the win with the Canaries 14/1 and the draw 7/1.
City, who start off away to West Ham, are 1/2 to win the title again next May with Liverpool 13/5.
