Baba Rahman set to seal Chelsea transfer as Augsburg signs Ghana defender's replacement
Defender Baba Abdul-Rahman is set to join English side Chelsea after his German club Augsburg signed left-back Philipp Max from Karlsruhe as replacement for the Ghana international.
Tuesday's signing of the Karlsruhe signals that Baba Rahman's transfer to Premier League champions Chelsea has moved a step closer.
Augsburg, fifth in the Bundesliga last term, have recruited a direct replacement for Ghana's Rahman even before his switch to England has been completed.
"We are pleased that we could sign a young and talented German player who developed very well at Karlsruhe last season," Augsburg sporting director Stefan Reuter said in a statement, adding that he was "convinced Max can continue his development with us and make the next step."
The 21-year-old has penned a deal until 2017.
Chelsea need a spare left back after selling the unsettled Filipe Luis back to Atletico Madrid and media reports say Rahman, 21, is the man Jose Mourinho has targeted to compete with Cesar Azpilicueta.
Reports say Chelsea's latest bid of 25 million euros (27 million dollars) has been largely accepted by Augsburg with the minutiae of the deal now being worked out for a player who only joined the club from Greuther Fuerth last year.
Chelsea have been chasing Rahman's signature for some time, after fellow suitors Arsenal appeared to drop their interest in the 21-year-old.
Augsburg are holding out for a £17.5million fee for their Ghana international, although the Blues are said to be hopeful of driving down that price.
And Max's arrival could go some way to helping Chelsea in the negotiations as Augsburg are more likely to sell in order to make up the cost of their new man.
As for Rose, Spurs are expected to drive a hard bargain for their 25-year-old full-back, who was plucked from Leeds United's academy back in 2007.
