Andy Carroll says returning to Newcastle after eight years away is what "dreams were made of" after signing on deadline day.

The 30-year-old, released by West Ham this summer following a six-year spell marred by injuries, inked a one-year contract at St James' Park.

Carroll scored 33 goals during his five years on Tyneside and helped the club win promotion to the top flight in 2009/10, before leaving to join Liverpool – becoming their record signing at the time.

When I put the shirt back on it will probably be a better feeling that it was the first time.

"I enjoyed the time I spent here, and hopefully I can carry on where I left off," said Carroll, who made his Newcastle debut 13 years ago.

"For me to get back to where I was, I think this is the only place for me."

Injuries limited him to 142 appearances and 34 goals for West Ham after signing for £15m in the summer of 2013. The Hammers opted not to renew his contract this summer.

Linking up with Steve Bruce's Magpies has ignited Carroll's passion once more and he's eager to shine back in the north east.

"When I put the shirt back on it will probably be a better feeling that it was the first time. It's something I wanted for a long time and now it's here," he added.

"Playing for your boyhood team and going away, you realise what you had and missed. Coming back it's something only dreams are made of."

Newcastle are 25/1 without the top-six this season, while Carroll can be backed at 150/1 to finish as the Premier League's leading scorer. He is 8/1 to be Newcastle's leading league scorer.
