CAN 2027 qualifying: Burundi lead Algeria 2-1 at half-time

Burundi hold a surprise 2-1 lead against Algeria at half-time in their second match of the CAN 2027 qualifying campaign.

The Fennecs fell behind after only five minutes when Fares Chaibi turned the ball into his own net. Burundi doubled their advantage seven minutes later, with J. Girumugisha scoring in the 12th minute.

Algeria responded on the half-hour mark as M. Belloumi pulled a goal back in the 30th minute.

Despite controlling much of the play and enjoying 73% possession, Algeria have so far been unable to overcome Burundi’s efficiency in front of goal.

One yellow card has been shown to each side, while Burundi will take their narrow advantage into the dressing room at the interval.

Algeria must now find a way back into the match after the break, with the outcome set to have significant implications for the group.
