Veteran former England centre-back Gary Cahill is looking forward to the challenge of making a fresh start with Crystal Palace, having been allowed to leave Chelsea.

The 33-year-old, who has won 61 caps for his country, has signed a two-year contract with the Eagles, having been allowed to leave Stamford Bridge after more than seven years with the Blues.

I'm hungry to keep playing - prolonging my career for as long as I can.

And Cahill, who worked with Palace boss Roy Hodgson when the latter was in charge of the national team, is excited about the opportunity to re-establish himself in the Premier League.

He told his new club's official website: "I'm glad to be here, I think it's a good opportunity for me to continue my career in the Premier League and to play in a good, exciting team. I'm looking forward to the challenge.

"I'm hungry to keep playing - prolonging my career for as long as I can. I feel in great shape and when I play, whoever that has been for, I like to think I give 100 per cent and leave it all out there."

Cahill becomes the third signing made by Palace this summer, with former loanee Jordan Ayew having completed a permanent move from Swansea City, while goalkeeper Stephen Henderson has been recruited from Nottingham Forest.

The Eagles begin their new Premier League season with a visit from Everton on Saturday, with the meeting of the two sides at Selhurst Park last season having ended in a goalless draw.

The hosts are 2/1 to win the game on Saturday and are 8/1 to triumph by a 1-0 scoreline, with Hodgson's side available at 12/5 to keep a clean sheet.
