Rivers United have lost their first leg quarter final match against Young African after losing by two goals to nothing in Uyo on Sunday, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Fiston Kalala Mayele's brace in the second half sunk the Hosts to a defeat that leaves the Nigerian representatives in a dicey situation ahead of the second leg in Tanzania.

The first half saw missed chances especially from the visiting showing the dominance of the encounter.

The Nigerian club side started as the side looking to score first after a freekick but Ebube Duru's strike had no threat in it.

Sochima Victor saved Stephen Aziz Ki's attempt to send the ball out for a corner kick before Ukeme Williams' goal line clearance to keep the score goalless in the 16th minute after Yannick Litombo's header hits the woodwork.

Rivers United closest chance came when Goalkeeper Djigui Diarra had saved Ekeocha Lawrence's corner delivery before it was cleared in the 20th minute.

However, it was still all about the visiting team as Sochima saved Stephen Aziz Ki's left footed shot in the 27th minute of the game.

He would later make another save towards the end of the first half as he saved Mudathiri Abasi's header with great composure in the 43rd minute.

After a  barren first controlled by the team from Tanzania, United finally were on the back forth twenty-four minutes into the second half of the game.

Fiston Mayele broke the deadlock with a precise finish following a brilliant inch-perfect pass by captain, Bakari Nondo Mwamnyeto to give the visitors a deserved lead. The goal had to be validated by the VAR.

Fiston Mayele got his brace in the 81st minute after a brilliant counter attack and an assist again by the captain Bakari Nondo Mwamnyeto to seal the win for Yanga SC.

Rivers United now have their work cut out as they seek to over turn the two goals next Sunday, 30th April, .2023 at kwenye Dimba la Benjamin Mkapa.
