CAF President Unveils Key Details of African Nations League Set for 2029
The President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, has provided fresh insight into the proposed African Nations League, which is scheduled to make its debut in 2029, reports Nigeriasoccernet.com.
The competition is expected to involve all 54 African national teams and has been described as a bold initiative aimed at reshaping continental football and creating more high-profile encounters.
Speaking during a media briefing, the CAF boss explained that the tournament will bring together Africa’s best teams in a format designed to ignite regional rivalries and attract global attention. He pointed to potential blockbuster fixtures such as Kenya vs Tanzania, Ghana vs Nigeria, Egypt vs Morocco, and Ivory Coast vs Cameroon as examples of the excitement the competition could generate.
According to him, the African Nations League will be hosted in a single country to ensure smooth logistics and create a festival-like atmosphere capable of attracting top players from across the continent. He also confirmed that the tournament will be played during the FIFA international window, making it easier for star players to participate.
The competition will initially adopt a zonal format, with teams competing within their regions. Each zone will host its matches, after which the zonal winners will advance to a final playoff stage. A draw will then be conducted to determine the fixtures for the decisive phase of the tournament.
If successfully implemented, the African Nations League is expected to become a major fixture on Africa’s football calendar, offering fans regular high-quality matchups while strengthening regional competition and continental unity through the game.
