CAF CL: “We won’t defend in the Second Leg against Esperance, We’ll Attack”- Ilechukwu
Manager of Plateau United Fidelis Ilechukwu has let the cat out of the bag on his game plan against four time CAF Champions League Winners, Esperance as both teams face off in the second leg of the CAF Champions League.
After defeating the North Africans 2-1 at home, the Peace Boys will journey to Tunisia with a slender lead, hoping to get the job done on foreign soil.
The former MFM FC gaffer also revealed that his team will not be on the back foot in the encounter as they will come out of the blocks, all guns blazing when facing the Tunisian giants.
“We will build from what we have achieved here and ensure that we approach the second leg with more strength and vigour.”
“We are not going to sit back and defend in the second leg in Tunisia, but we will rather come out all guns blazing because we understand what is at stake.”
“I will adopt an all-attacking formation in the return leg to qualify for the group stage which we have already set for ourselves long before now and we are committed to that objective”. He concluded.
Plateau United came from a goal down to beat the Tunisians at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Sunday 9 October, 2022.
This is the third time the Peace Boys have featured in the CAF Champions League.
Plateau United won their first major silverware in 1999, a 1-0 Nigeria Cup final victory over Iwuanyanwu Nationale on a goal by Donatus Iloka and qualified for the African Cup Winners’ Cup but were eliminated in the first round.
The African Cup Winners' Cup was a football competition that started in 1975 and merged with the CAF Cup in 2004 to form the CAF Confederation Cup. It was a competition between the winning clubs of domestic cups in CAF-affiliated nations and was modelled after the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
