Borussia Monchengladbach dismiss Eugen Polanski after three-game losing start

Borussia Monchengladbach have dismissed head coach Eugen Polanski after losing their opening three matches of the Bundesliga season.

The decision was announced on Sunday, a day after Gladbach were beaten 5-0 by Freiburg, a result which left the club rooted to the bottom of the table.

Polanski, a former long-serving Borussia Monchengladbach player at both youth and senior level, had been in charge since taking over in September 2025.

The club said the team’s poor run of results, despite a positive build-up to the campaign, had prompted the decision to make an immediate change.

“Despite a good pre-season and some encouraging signs, the team haven't been able to get the results we were looking for in the Bundesliga,” Gladbach head of sport Rouven Schroder said in a statement.

“Our recent performances ultimately led us to the conclusion that a change was needed, and we have therefore relieved Eugen of his duties with immediate effect.”

Gladbach began the season with a 3-0 defeat by RB Leipzig. They then surrendered a three-goal lead in the second half of a match against promoted Elversberg, eventually losing 4-3 a week later.

The subsequent heavy defeat by Freiburg left them without a point after three league matches and brought Polanski’s time as manager to an end.

Former Mainz 05 head coach Jan-Moritz Lichte will take temporary charge of the team.
