Black Starlets join the Super Eaglets in the semi-finals as they thrash Togo 3-0
Hosts Black Starlets of Ghana have qualified for the semi-finals of the 2022 U-17 WAFU B tournament, after thrashing Togo 3-0 in their last Group A game at the Cape Coast stadium on Friday.
The win means Ghana qualified for the semi-finals alongside the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria from Group A.
Both Ghana and Togo went into Friday’s game on the back of defeats to the Golden Eaglets.
While Ghana suffered a 4-2 defeat to the Eaglets in the opening game of the tournament, Togo lost 3-1.
But it was the Ghanaians who eventually picked the second semi-final ticket, following the comfortable win thanks to goals from Pius Adua, Abdul Razak Salifu and Collins Agyemang.
Although there were no goals in the first half, Ghana were the better team and failed to score due to a combination of poor decision-making and good goalkeeping.
Ghana started the second half similarly to the first, taking the lead in the 54th minute when Pius Adua connected with a pass from Andrew Appiah.
Abdul Razak Salifu scored in the 74th minute to give the Black Starlets a 2-0 lead.
Collins Agyemang made it 3-0 and sealed the game after converting a penalty.
The win guaranteed that the Black Starlets would progress to the last four.
In the final Group B games on Saturday, Benin will face Niger and Ivory Coast play Burkina Faso.
The WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship serves as a qualifier for the African Cup of Nations in Algeria in 2023.
The competition will take place early next year, with the finalists competing.
The Golden Eaglets will take on the team that finishes second in Group B and the Black Starlets will battle the group’s winner.
