Bayern Munich reportedly consider January move for Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz

Florian Wirtz’s difficult start to life at Liverpool has intensified speculation that Bayern Munich could make a move for the Germany international in the January transfer window.

Football Insider reports that the German champions are prepared to sign Wirtz if he becomes available, although there has been no confirmation that Liverpool are willing to sell the 23-year-old.

Wirtz was substituted after 71 minutes during Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium, a result secured by Alexander Isak’s early goal. The victory moved Liverpool up to sixth in the Premier League table, but their performance was criticised despite earning all 3 points.

The midfielder was among those to attract particular scrutiny, with his passing accuracy reported to be around 70%. His display against Bournemouth followed further criticism of his performances against Ipswich, Atletico Madrid and Fulham.

Wirtz has been accused of struggling to produce chances, complete straightforward passes and execute simple touches. Those difficulties have led some to question whether he is suited to the Premier League.

Before joining Liverpool, Wirtz was a key player for Bayer Leverkusen. Across his final two Bundesliga seasons with the club, he scored 21 goals and registered 23 assists in 63 appearances, helping Bayer Leverkusen win an unbeaten league title.

The midfielder is already familiar with Germany’s top division, having established himself in the Bundesliga before his move to Liverpool. If Bayern Munich’s interest develops into a formal opportunity, Wirtz could consider asking to leave Liverpool, where he has continued to struggle from week to week under new manager Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool’s difficulties have also prompted criticism from club legend Jamie Carragher. Speaking this week, Carragher said Wirtz would not be selected for Liverpool’s match against Manchester City after the international break if he were in charge of the team.

“Wirtz has been really poor again. It's just nothing. Nothing is happening there at all.

“That was one of the poorest I've ever seen him in a Liverpool shirt.”
