Paul Heckingbottom was born in Barnsley, played for the club and was caretaker boss before becoming head coach

Barnsley have opened talks with boss Paul Heckingbottom over a new contract, says chief executive Gauthier Ganaye.

Heckingbottom guided Barnsley to 14th in the Championship last season after being appointed head coach on a 12-month rolling contract in June 2016.

The 40-year-old was linked to the Sunderland job earlier this month.

"We value Paul really highly, so we have been discussing with him and his representative for a little while," Ganaye told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"I hope that everybody will agree and find a way for Paul to stay at Barnsley for a while."

Heckingbottom, a former Barnsley full-back, guided the team to victory in the 2016 Johnstone's Paint Trophy and League One play-off finals after being put in caretaker charge when Lee Johnson left Oakwell to take charge of Bristol City.

Barnsley are 17th this season, six points clear of the relegation places, with five wins and five draws from their 17 matches.
