Barcelona no longer see central defence as a transfer priority

Barcelona have decided that strengthening at centre-back is no longer an immediate necessity, according to journalist Adrian Sanchez.

The change in approach follows the contract extension signed by Andreas Christensen. Despite the departures of Ronald Araujo and Alvaro Cortes, the Catalan club believe their defensive options are sufficiently strong.

Barcelona are top of La Liga after four rounds, having collected 12 points.

Hans-Dieter Flick’s side are next in action away from home against Levante on Sunday, 13 September. The match is scheduled to begin at 17:15 Moscow time.

Barcelona had previously been reported to be pursuing an 18-year-old central defender from Twente in the final days of the transfer window. Their assessment of the position has since changed following Christensen’s renewal.

The club now consider the centre-back position adequately covered and no longer believe it requires urgent reinforcement.
