In a disappointing turn of events, Taiwo Awoniyi provided a crucial assist as Nottingham Forest succumbed to a 4-2 defeat against Aston Villa, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Despite passing a late fitness test to secure a spot in Forest’s starting lineup, Awoniyi witnessed Aston Villa storming into a commanding 3-0 lead, courtesy of goals from Ollie Watkins and a brace from Douglas Luiz.

However, Moussa Niakhate managed to narrow the deficit just before halftime, capitalizing on an assist from Awoniyi.

Despite Awoniyi's contributions, including six goals and three assists in 15 league appearances this season, Forest struggled to rally.

Although Morgan Gibbs-White managed to further cut the deficit for Forest after the break, Aston Villa swiftly regained their two-goal lead through Leon Bailey just a minute after the hour mark.

Awoniyi will hope to return to the scoring sheet this Wednesday when Nottingham Forest host Manchester United in the 5th round of the FA Cup.
