Awoniyi Replaces Osimhen in Super Eagles Squad for AFCON Qualifiers
Taiwo Awoniyi has been called up to replace injured Victor Osimhen in Nigeria’s squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
The Super Eagles confirmed Awoniyi’s inclusion on Sunday through their official X account, with the Coventry City striker returning to the national team setup ahead of the two important Group L fixtures.

Awoniyi will now be available for Nigeria’s opening qualifier against Madagascar on September 25 before the Super Eagles face Guinea-Bissau four days later.
The 29-year-old forward recently joined newly promoted Coventry City after leaving Nottingham Forest and has been handed an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s attacking options following Osimhen’s withdrawal.
Awoniyi’s return gives head coach Eric Chelle another experienced option up front as Nigeria prepare to begin their campaign for a place at the 2027 AFCON.
The Super Eagles are in Group L alongside Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and Tanzania, with the three-time African champions looking to make a positive start to the qualifying series.
