Atlanta aim to keep winning
The defending MLS Cup champions are in Southern California on Friday evening as they face the Western Conference leaders, LAFC, at the Banc of California Stadium.
Atlanta United, 10/1 to win the MLS Cup, have shaken off their slow start to the season and now sit second in the Eastern Conference behind the Philadelphia Union. Atlanta have three wins, one draw and one loss in all competitions in their last five outings including back-to-back clean sheets against the Houston Dynamo and DC United in their last two games.
Late goals from Gonzalo Martinez and Josef Martinez gave Atlanta all the points in their 2-0 triumph against DC United at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Atlanta were maybe a little fortunate to come away with all three points, but the victory did move them ahead of DC United in the standings.
DC United return to action on Saturday when they play the Chicago Fire on the road. Chicago are third from the bottom in the Eastern Conference, but DC United are unlikely to overlook their opponents after the Fire stunned Atlanta 5-1 at the beginning of July.
Meanwhile, LAFC must rebound after being well and truly Zlataned in their El Trafico clash with the LA Galaxy. Zlatan Ibrahimovic talked the talk before the match last Friday, proclaiming that he, rather than LAFC's high-scoring striker Carlos Vela, was the best player in MLS.
Zlatan then well and truly walked the walk with a hat-trick in the 3-2 triumph, including an absolute peach of a goal from just outside the box after beating two defenders with a neat flick.
