ASN Nigelec and MC Alger locked level after tense CAF Champions League first half

ASN Nigelec and MC Alger were goalless at half-time in the first leg of their CAF Champions League first preliminary-round tie at the Stade Seyni Kountche in Niamey, with both sides still in contention as they seek a place in the second preliminary round.

MC Alger created the first clear attacking opportunity of the match in the 12th minute. The Algerian club broke quickly on the counter-attack and briefly caught the ASN Nigelec defence out of position. However, the visitors’ low cross was intercepted before it could reach its intended target.

The home side’s defensive organisation continued to frustrate MC Alger, whose players found little space in front of the Nigerien back line. ASN Nigelec remained compact and committed, while MC Alger’s defence also held firm whenever the hosts attempted to impose their physical approach.

The visitors came closest to opening the scoring shortly before the interval. In the 37th minute, a free-kick forced the ASN Nigelec goalkeeper into a full-length save, with the ball pushed behind for a corner.

Despite enjoying moments of promise, MC Alger have been unable to turn their opportunities into a goal. ASN Nigelec, meanwhile, have protected their goal effectively and ensured that the first half ended without either side gaining an advantage in the tie.

The second half is expected to bring greater intensity as both teams continue their pursuit of progress to the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

The goalless scoreline leaves the match finely balanced at the interval. MC Alger will be looking to make their greater attacking threat count after the restart, while ASN Nigelec will aim to maintain the defensive discipline that has so far kept the Algerian favourites at bay.
