"?Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that he had no choice but to leave it to someone else to try and find the 'key' to unlocking Nicklas Bendtner's vast potential, having spent many years trying and failing to get the best out of the Danish cult hero.

Wenger will be reunited with Bendtner when the Gunners face Nottingham Forest in the third round of the EFL Cup this week, and has praised the natural ability the player possesses.

"He had good technique, good stature, good pace, he's good in the air, he has good link play. He had it all in the locker," the Frenchman is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

That being said, Wenger eventually reached the point where he knew he was unable to do any more for Bendtner.

"Sometimes you manage to get it, sometimes we do not find the key and you have to leave the key to somebody else with the potential to find it," he explained.

After four inconsistent seasons in the Gunners first-team, Bendtner's time as an Arsenal player began to draw to a close in 2011 when he headed to Sunderland on loan. That was followed by a temporary spell at Juventus before a brief return to Arsenal in 2013/14.

He was finally cut loose after 10 years as an Arsenal player in 2014, signing with Wolfsburg in Germany. The striker saw that contract prematurely terminated this summer, leaving him to return to England as a free agent, joining Forest in the Championship a fortnight ago.
