Emmanuel Amunike Believes That If He Had Represented An European Team NAd Not Nigeria, Then he Would Have Won The Ballon d’Or.

Former Sporting Lisbon and Barcelona Star, Emmanuel Amunike has opened up about his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or during his playing days.

Amunike had an impressive career, winning the African Nations Cup in 1994 and African Footballer of the Year in 1994 before going ahead to score the winning goal for Nigeria at the final of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

The explosive winger, who started his career with Julius Berger FC and went on to represent Nigeria at the 1994 FIFA World Cup and 1996 Olympics, blamed his failure to win the much-coveted individual award on his representing Nigeria and not a European nation.

On his Ballon d’Or, Amunike said during the unveiling of the LaLiga Nigerian office in Lagos: “I usually tell some of my friends that if I had started my football career as a European player, maybe, I would have won the World Footballer of the year award. Unfortunately, I started from Nigeria and only God knows why.
